Healthcare Data: Pitfalls and Peculiarities
Rebecca Owen, FSA MAAA
PacificSource

Data is at the heart of all health care financial studies. What questions should we be asking of those who prepare our data or if we are preparing the data ourselves, what common problems exist in claims datasets that make for erroneous conclusions? What new codes are being used this year, or what codes have changed? What is the effect of “code-creep”? This webcast will be a brief overview for actuaries and other healthcare data users who have not handled claims data directly and wish to have a tutorial about the content of claims sets.

Achieving ROI and Avoiding Measurement Fallacies (3 Part Series)
After years of debate about ROI Measurement could the DM industry finally be ready to agree on something? The catalyst is a paper by Ariel Linden DrPH published in the April edition of the American Journal of Managed Care. Is this approach the answer? Join Ariel Linden and industry experts Al Lewis, Rebecca Owen and Ian Duncan in a new series of webcasts about recent developments in ROI measurement.

Session One
June 29, 2006 Ariel Linden, DrPH, MS
President, Linden Consulting Group

"What Will it Take for Disease Management to Demonstrate an ROI?"
This presentation will provide a methodology for assessing whether there exists enough opportunity in your population for DM to show an economic impact.

Session Two
July 13, 2006 Ian Duncan, FSA MAAA
President, Solucia, Inc.

Rebecca Owen, FSA MAAA
PacificSource

"Better ROI Calculations Using Predictive Modeling" ROI calculations traditionally use a comparison between populations, assuming that the populations are equivalent. However, unless an explicit risk-adjustment is applied, a change in a population’s relative risk profile can affect savings estimates. This webcast will address new applications of risk-adjustment to ensure population risk-equivalence, including examples from client results.
Session Three
July 20, 2006 Al Lewis President, Disease Management Purchasing Consortium, Int’l

"ROI Measurement: Finding the Fallacies" Session will show participants how to "critically analyze" reporting, how to spot the fallacies and know when savings are "real." The session will include a contest and prizes!
