This session will discuss the methods for evaluating outcomes of an employee wellness program and present the evaluation results of the Highmark Inc. employee wellness program, which were recently published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Learn how to develop predictive models for identifying potential candidates for coaching and behavior change for employee wellness programs.

Ian Duncan, FSA MAAA
President, Solucia Consulting, a SCIOinspire Company

Mr. Duncan is president of Solucia Consulting, a SCIOinspire Company with headquarters in Farmington, CT. Solucia is a provider of analytical and consulting services to the healthcare financing industry. Mr. Duncan has 30 years of experience in healthcare and insurance product design, management, financing, pricing, and delivery. He has started and built consulting practices, and was a founder of a company providing predictive modeling services to managed health insurers and is the only actuary who has actually implemented and managed disease management programs.

Mr. Duncan holds a post-graduate degree in economics from Balliol College, Oxford, and is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries. He serves on the boards of directors of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Healthcare Connector Authority and the Freelancers Insurance Co. He serves as chair of the Society of Actuaries Healthcare External Relations committee. . He is a frequent speaker at industry events, and is the author of numerous papers and books, including the recent release of his newest book, Managing and Evaluating Healthcare Intervention Programs.

Brian T. Day, EdD
Director of Advanced Analytics, Highmark

Dr. Brian Day is currently the Director of Advanced Analytics and has been employed at Highmark for 8 years. His department is responsible for developing innovative strategies in trending disease and costs, developing ROI models, and conducting financial and clinical analysis of both internal and external initiatives sponsored by Highmark.

Prior to employment at Highmark, Brian worked at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for 9 years as a statistician and health communications researcher and consultant. Before NIOSH, Brian was a project coordinator at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and oversaw the operations and evaluation of a multi-year, 400 plus family, longitudinal research study investigating the fire setting behavior among children.

Disease Management and Wellness: Results of a Market Survey. Presentations and an Interactive Panel Discussion on the Future of Disease Management and Wellness Programs

An in-depth, comprehensive study on the state of the disease management and wellness industry was conducted by DMAA: The Care Continuum Alliance and The Gantry Group. The results deliver new quantitative insights regarding key components of population health improvement including:

  • the size of the industry by lives covered, disease states managed, types of wellness initiatives;
  • the performance of current disease management and health and wellness programs;
  • future growth plans for the industry; and
  • current and expected industry trends.

Dr. Mischler, Principal, Mischler Consultants, LLC will highlight data from the survey respondents including key findings related to critical components of disease management program success, ways to increase the impact of disease management, critical attributes of wellness program success, and trends in RFPs for disease management and wellness services. Jonathan Gelfand, director of health and well-being for Hess Corporation will react to the information presented by the survey from the perspective of an employer and will offer his insights into what is needed for success as we look to the future. Bart Bracken, Managing Partner, Solucia Consulting will bring the perspective of health plans and service organizations to the discussion. Mischler Consultants, LLC

Elaine Mischler M.D., Principal, Mischler Consultants, LLC ,serves as a consultant for groups interested in strategies and innovation for success with population health programs. She has worked extensively with product development in the disease management and health and wellness industry. She has been a physician executive, clinician, teacher, author, speaker, and researcher in academic, community health organizations, health benefits administration, data analysis organizations, and managed health care for over 30 years. She received her M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and completed a fellowship in pediatric pulmonology at the University of California, San Diego and the University of Iowa.

Jonathan Gelfand, MPH, MBA
Director of Health and Well-Being, Hess Corp.

Jonathan Gelfand is the director of health and well-being for Hess Corporation where he is responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive integrated corporate population health strategy. Previously, he held positions with disease management and health technology firms, and in long-term care. Jonathan earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Skidmore College, a master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and an MBA from Rutgers University.

Bart Bracken
Managing Partner, Solucia Consulting, a SCIOinspire Company

Bart Bracken is a healthcare executive with more than 20 years of experience in the healthcare and disability industries as a consultant and serving in senior leadership positions with large managed care organizations and specialty entrepreneurial companies. His broad experience includes managed care operations, strategic planning, marketing, business development, product development, and program management with both private and public sector programs. He has a Master in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University and a BA, magna cum laude, in Economics from St. Lawrence University.
